The new airsoft G45 is added to the company’s Gas Airsoft product line. Unlike the airguns of the Umarex CO2 Airsoft and CO2 BB Gun series, pistols in Gas Airsoft line are designed to resemble their real counterparts as closely as possible. Not only the Gas Airsoft Umarex Glocks are identical to the real guns in terms of the dimensions and weight, but they also have a similar disassembly process, blowback slides that reciprocate when firing creating an imitation of a cycling slide, and magazines shaped like the real ones. All these features make the Gas Airsoft line of Umarex pistols ideal for using as training tools providing a feel identical to the real gun when practicing presentations, magazine changes and other weapon manipulations.
The Glock 45 was actually the newest addition to its 9x19mm family of pistols that shared many features including design and engineering elements found in the company’s 5th Generation of handguns. The Glock 45 is also built on the crossover design of the Glock 19X, while featuring a hard-surface finish in non-reflective black.
After the release of the G19X, we saw a strong interest from the law enforcement community for the design in a black model,” Glock, Inc. VP Josh Dorsey told MilitaryTimes in 2018. “The G45 is the result of a design that meets the demanding level of reliability with distinctive Gen5 design enhancements to improve durability, accuracy and performance to those who go into harm’s way where fractions of a second matter.”
The company described the Glock 45 as combining a compact slide with a full-size frame. It is very much a hybrid of the original G17 and the compact-sized G19. It incorporates the G17’s full-length grip, which allows for the operator to carry it as an 18-round pistol with the chamber loaded. Yet, it utilizes the G19-length barrel, making for a faster draw out of the holster. The combination of longer grip and shorter barrel/slide assembly ensures that it is a well-balanced pistol.
The Glock 45 lacks a manual safety, but features the Safe Action System (SAS), which is comprised of a trigger safety, firing pin safety, and drop safety. As Guns & Ammo explained, “The SAS provides a measure of safety without requiring the operator to deactivate a thumb or grip safety. All three safeties disengage as the trigger is pulled and re-engage when the trigger is reset.”
It also features a polymer frame with an nDLC finish and flared magazine well, along with smoother trigger pull, an enhanced frame texture for better handling, a reversible magazine catch, ambidextrous slide stop lever, Modular Backstrap System (MBS), match-grade Glock Marksman Barrel (GMB), and precision-milled front serrations forward of the ejection port. The handgun’s mounting rail also allows for the addition of a light – a feature that is considered to be critically important for a duty pistol.
The Glock 45 was certainly designed with law enforcement in mind, but with its full-size frame and compact slide, this is gun has already become a popular choice as a home-defense weapon.
Glock’s model numbers can be a little confusing because each model is just the latest addition to the firearms line that began with the Glock 17 – which was named as such because it was the 17th patent granted to Gaston Glock. Before that Gaston Glock had patented a variety of other products including a folding shovel.
